My husband and I added a little SYA donkey to our equine family this spring. After visiting the rescue a few times for work, I realized that a donkey companion would be perfect for our spunky little pony mare, "Sassy". We picked out a very handsome little spotted donkey named "Rocky" and as soon as we met him we knew he would be a perfect addition. I admired his intelligence watching him very smartly maneuver through a herd of much larger donkeys to get out of the rain. We really wanted a companion for our pony who would not add much drama to the farm and Rocky was the perfect choice, he balances out Sassy's fiery temperament with his calm and babysits her when we take the other horses out trail riding.
Not only is Rocky a perfect companion, his personality adds something to our little farm we didn't even know was missing until we got him. He has the most gentle, serene demeanor about him, and will quietly follow you around while you do chores, from a polite distance watching for the right moment to ask for a ear rub. But if breakfast is late he lets you know with the loudest bray I have ever heard, at least the first dozen times I heard it I doubled over with laughter. He puts his entire little body into it, all the way to his tail!
Every time he lowers his head for an ear rub, I impulsively take a deep breath. He has a wonderful calming influence on not only the horses, but the people he meets. We are very grateful to Ann and Lil for taking this little guy in and helping us realize what we were missing!
